Grummans in the Gulf
Both the Intruder and the Prowler served with distinction in the
Gulf War. In fact, A-6 Intruders were part of the general strike
package, which hit the first targets near Baghdad on January 17,
1991. In the first days of the air war, F/A-18 Hornets took out
radar installations while EA-6s jammed what was left.
Throughout the war, A-6s would attack from 25,000 feet and
release their four 2,000-pound bombs at 15,000 feet. Prowlers
used their AGM-88 HARM anti-radar missiles to destroy the radar
that still operated after jamming. A-6Es flew from aircraft
carriers, such as the Independence, Eisenhower, Midway and John
F. Kennedy, while the EA-Bs operated from these and also from
the Theodore Roosevelt.
After Desert Storm, the Navy wanted to replace the A-6 with the
A-12. But this program disappeared in a mismanagement fiasco.
Although one of the oldest planes in the military, the A-6
Intruder's excellent performance in the Gulf more than justified
its continued service.
